Wow. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book that genuinely touched my soul and pulled on my heartstrings. I bought this book a while ago, before it exploded onto the literary scene and became a book club favourite, and I’m so glad that I did. It’s described as a murder mystery, a coming of age story, and an appreciation of nature- and it’s exactly that. It’s also a love story. The prose is beautiful. Abandoned by her family as a young girl, my heart breaks for Kya, known as ‘The Marsh Girl’. Set in North Carolina, it sets the scene of the deep south perfectly, including typical southern food (grits?!) and notably, the racial and class dichotomies. People may come and go, but nature will always stay with you. I won’t give too much away, but this is definitely a must-read, a story that will stay with you for a long time.
